Bruce Weber will accept job at Illinois

Published: Apr 30, 2003 - 08:49 PM

Bruce Webber has agreed to a multiyear deal to replace Bill Self as head basketball coach at Illinois.

Webber met with assistant coach Wayne McClain Tuesday night to talk about the players already on board and about the future of the Illini program. A press conference to announce Webber's hiring should come Wednesday.
Webber led Southern Illinois to the NCAA tournament in each of the last two seasons, and he certainly knows the Big 10 after serving a long apprenticeship under Gene Keady at Purdue. Webber also has an outgoing personality.

He spent five years at Southern Illinois putting together a 103-54 record. He also served as Keady's right-hand man for 18 years at Purdue.

Webber is a 46-year-old native of Milwaukee. He's married with three daughters.

Stay tuned to NBC 5 Wednesday to learn more about the new coach
